TV Listing Magazine Cover - Research

There are boxes and borders around images and titles, which helps to create an eye-catching appeal for the audience. There is a great use of strong, bold colours; such as bold reds, blues, greens, pinks, oranges, etc. These colours are very conflicting, with no colour coordination; however it still works well in terms of being attention-grabbing. The sub-titles are highlighted with the use of capital lettering, heighted, large fonts, with colour change and font change. As there is an absence of continuous font standards, this can become quite confusing for the viewer. Nevertheless, this is effective in sending out more than one message, as this could gain as many potential readers as possible. It can be seen that the characters for the main storyline are positioned in the centre of the cover looking directly into the camera, in order to make them appear to be looking at the reader, making them feel more connected with the characters. The characters facial reactions vary according to the storyline associated with the magazine cover; for example, in a storyline which consists of love, it is most likely that two cast members will be shown smiling and happy. On the other hand, a storyline involving a tense atmosphere is most likely to show characters with a more firm, resentful expression (such as the cover shown on the left). The cover also displays the cost of the magazine twice, possible to emphasize the relatively low price; which in turn may encourage more potential readers to purchase the magazine.
